Categories

Every system, piece of equipment and sub-equipment can have a category. Categories help you report on and look at similar equipment together — all chillers, all emergency generators, all forklifts.

You have two kinds of categories:

  • The kommuns category library, based on the MasterFormat classification used in construction and facilities. Its names are currently in Turkish.
  • Your own Company Categories, in your own language and with your own codes. They are visible only in your organization.

For an English-speaking team we recommend company categories. The Harborview Hotels demo uses codes like these:

CodeCategoryParent
HVACHVAC—
HVAC-CHChillersHVAC
HVAC-AHUAir handling unitsHVAC
ELEC-GENEmergency generatorsELEC
FLS-FPFire pumpsFLS
VT-PASPassenger elevatorsVT

Reading a MasterFormat code

A library code has three pairs of digits, getting more specific from left to right:

CodeLevelExample
23 00 00DivisionHeating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC)
23 64 00GroupPackaged water chillers
23 64 26DetailRotary-screw water chillers

Frequently used divisions: 21 Fire suppression · 22 Plumbing · 23 HVAC · 26 Electrical · 14 Conveying equipment (elevators, escalators) · 28 Electronic safety and security.

Finding the right category

In the system or equipment form click Select Category and type a word in the search box (e.g. chiller, pump, generator). Pick the most specific match. If the equipment already has a category, the tree opens at it so you see its neighbors right away.

Your own categories

Build your own category tree under OrganizationCategories. The root of the tree is Company Categories.

To…Do this
Add a main categoryAdd Main Category at the bottom of the page.
Add a subcategorySelect a category in the tree and click Add Subcategory below it.
Edit its name or descriptionSelect the category, then Edit.
Delete itSelect the category, Edit › Delete. A category with subcategories can not be deleted: delete or move them first.
Move itDrag it onto another category (below).

Moving by drag and drop

Drag a category and drop it onto another one: it becomes that category's subcategory, together with its own subcategories. The target is highlighted in orange and kommuns asks before moving (Move the category? › Move). To move a category to the top level, drop it onto Company Categories. The Company Categories root itself can not be moved.

The systems and equipment that use the category are not affected; only its place in the tree changes.
